Drabble: Proper Care

Title: Proper Care

Author: T. Dunn

Rating: FRC

Characters: Giles

Summary: Early lessons that still hold true today.

Disclaimer: I thank Joss Whedon for the character of Rupert Giles and Anthony Head for the portrayal of said character.

“Rupert, I don’t know how you are able to use these.”

She drew a handkerchief from her pocket. “Wrap this around like this.” Taking her son’s hand in hers, she demonstrated while she spoke. “Now apply gentle pressure to both sides of the glass.”

They finished with the first, then repeated the action on the second. He went to hand the cloth back to his mum. “You keep it. I find blurring my vision, at times; can actually give way to clearer thoughts.

Giles smiled as he packed the threadbare cloth into his suitcase. He was gonna need a clear head when he started teaching his Slayer.

Thank you. Been wearing specs for an extremely long time myself. Thought of my son as I wrote this as he has a tendency to let his glasses get so grimy it's a wonder he can see anything.

That's terribly sweet. I love all references to Giles' mum.

Thank you. I've always pictured his mum as being very caring and since there are no canon references to her. Except an omission in one of the comics I assume she passed before he turned ten.

So we have to thank his mum for that endearing habit. Lovely.

That is one of the sweetest drabbles I've ever read. I love little Giles and his mum.

Awww! That was darling!

So often in fic the only thing we see about Giles' parents is that he lost his mother early on (I've written this as well - I blame early exposure to Disney for that trope). And maybe here he has still, but we don't usually get insights into happier times with him and either of his parents. This was just a really nice little trip into the past. Nicely done. :)
