She shouldn't be doing this, shouldn't be doing him, but there's something about the old librarian that she never noticed until his favored students left her all alone and crying. She used to be the most powerful thing to ever prowl these high school halls, but his little Slayer took all of that from her. She made her look at that geek, Xander, with new eyes. She made her want to help her little group to the point that she lost all her cool points and became an outcast from both the geeks and the freaks and the popular students who she once led.
This isn't about the man she's leaving behind her, still zipping up his trousers amongst old and dusty books she'll never touch. It isn't about trying to find a place where she feels comfortable or having been able to cry on his shoulder. It isn't about his "old world charm" as she's heard some of the younger teachers babble about him. It certainly isn't about him.
Cordelia flips open her mirror and checks to make sure her makeup isn't marred. One thing she can say about the old man is that he certainly isn't as messy a kisser as that geek was. He also isn't altogether a bad kisser.
"Miss Chase . . . Wha -- What are you doing? I mean, ahem, how can I help you?"
"Save it, Giles: The New Generation." She no longer Wesley, and thank God because he kisses like a fish. She doesn't need anybody in this place, but soon, soon, she'll have her revenge.
"Yeah. What are you doing here?"
Cordelia smirks at Buffy. "Wouldn't you like to know?" she tosses her hair and words together. The blonde will know soon enough. She might have taken her reputation. She might now be an outcast because of her. But soon, very soon, Buffy will know who controls her Watcher. It isn't her, and it isn't the Council. Cordelia's smile is wide, confident, and grows when she notices Xander, Wesley, and Willow all gulp. They'll know soon enough that the real power has always been in Cordelia Chase.
"Hum. M-Miss Chase was just checking out a book."
"Really?" Buffy's look makes it plain that she's noticed Cordy isn't holding a book.
"I was checking out something," Cordelia responds, and when Buffy looks uncomfortable and at last uncertain, she breezes pass her with all the confidence in the world. She might have Sunnydale High. She might have the title of the Slayer and think that makes her the new, biggest, and baddest bitch Sunnydale has ever seen, but soon the little Slayer will know Cordelia has her Watch and, through his strings, she'll soon have them all. She laughs as the library doors shut behind her. Buffy won't know what hit her; all the power is hers.
